USCG Auxiliary SEAL OF SAFETY Checklist
 

The following is a list of safety equipment that will be checked during a Free Courtesy Marine Examination(CME) - conducted by the USCG Auxiliary. Boats meeting the requirements will receive a CME decal for their boat, which may qualify for a discount on your Marine Insurance. For information on a free Inspection call USCG Customer Infoline at 1-800-368-5647. Items listed under the "NOT APPL" column are not required equipment for all size boats but are highly recommended equipment.

1. NUMBERING: (Proper spacing, contrasting color, minimum 3" Block Letters)      
2. REGISTRATION/DOCUMENTATION (papers must be on board)      
3. NAVIGATION LIGHTS (must operate and show proper configuration)      
4. SOUND PRODUCING DEVICE (Horn, whistle, or other device)      
5. BELL (Boats 12m [39.4 ft.] or longer)      
6. LIFE JACKETS (One wearable for each passenger, minimum-two, Boats 16 ft. & over also one type IV)      
7. FIRE EXTINGUISHER (Mounted, minimum for size & type of boat, HALON/FE241/CO2-current tag)      
VISUAL DISTRESS SIGNALS      
8. INLANDS (VDS, flag, signal light, etc.)      
9. COASTAL & GREAT LAKES (Minimum flares/aerial rockets or approved signals, not expired.)      
10. VENTILATION (For closed compartments with potential for explosive vapors and an ignition source. Installed blower must work. Warning posted)      
11. BACKFIRE FLAME ARRESTER (Approved type, tight installation, clean)      
12. FUEL SYSTEM (Tanks secure. Tanks over 7 gallons are considered permanent & must be grounded/vented. Hoses in good condition, no leaks)      
13. ANCHOR AND ANCHOR LINE (Suitable for the boat and the boating area)      
14. ALTERNATE PROPULSION (Boats under 16 ft. paddle, oar, etc.)      
15. DEWATERING DEVICE (Pumps must work, extra manual bailer)      
16. OVERALL VESSEL CONDITION (Bilge & equipment area clean, well maintained. Not overloaded, overpowered, or automotive parts)      
17. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (Batteries secure, terminal covered, well organized wiring, proper fuses,circuit breakers)      
18. GALLEY/HEATING SYSTEM (Secure system, proper tank installation. No flammable material nearby)      
19. STATE REQUIREMENTS (Comply with all state safety requirements) *Local and state regulations may differ, however they will be covered during your inspection      
20. MARINE SANITATION DEVICE (Approved device, overboard discharge sealed)      
21. MARPOL TRASH PLACARD (Boat 26 ft. & over, w/machinery compartment)      
22. POLLUTION PLACARD (Boat 12m, or 39.4 ft. and over)      
23. NAVIGATION RULES (Boat 12m, or 39.4 ft. and over)      
24. FCC MARINE RADIO LICENSE (All radios, radar, EPIRB etc.) Required for foreign travel or commercial vessel operation. Not legal requirement for pleasure boats unless traveling in foreign waters.
